Non-Linear Editing means you "import" your film into a computer based editing system.

Once your film footage has been converted to a digital video signal that has been imported into a computer, you can perform many types of editing procedures with your film.

When you have completed your editing, the edited movie in your computer is "outputted" onto a video format.

That format becomes your video master of your movie, and you make copies of that for distribution purposes.

by the way, non-linear means you can change the length of your edited movie instantaneously.
